GR120 The Basque Leg of the Ignatian Way
Saint Ignatius’s route to Manresa
The Ignatian Way recreates the route taken by Ignatius of Loyola in 1522, from his home town Azpeitia (Gipuzkoa) to the Catalan city of Manresa. He set out on this pilgrimage following his spiritual conversion in Loyola, and his ultimate aim was to reach the holy city of Jerusalem.
Today, the route that has been mapped using Saint Ignatius’s personal notes starts at the house where he was born in Loyola (Azpeitia), and ends at the “Cova de San Ignacio” in Manresa (near the Montserrat Monastery in Catalonia). It is a long and challenging journey of about 675 kilometres that crosses 5 autonomous regions and takes about 30 days.
